حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، ثنا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عُلَيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَائِذٍ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ أَرْطَاةَ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ السَّكُونِيِّ، أَنَّ آتِيًا أَتَاهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ لَنَا جَارًا يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ، وَيَأْتِي الْقَبِيحَ، فَأُنْهِيَ أَمْرُهُ إِلَى السُّلْطَانِ؟ قَالَ: «لَقَدْ قَتَلْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنِّي قَتَلْتُ مَثَلُهُمْ، وَأَنِّي كَشَفْتُ قِنَاعَ مُسْلِمٍ»
The narrator states that a man came to his brother, Sayyiduna Artat bin al-Mundhir al-Sakuni (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: We have a neighbour who drinks wine and commits shameful deeds; should his case be reported to the ruler? He said: "I killed ninety-nine of the polytheists in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it would not please me to kill as many more as them and to expose the covering of a Muslim."
