Alqamah bin Qays al-Nakha'i narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Last night I gave my wife eight divorces. He asked: "Did you say it all at once?" He said: Yes. He asked: "Do you want her to be separated from you?" He said: Yes. He said: "It is as you said." The narrator said: Then another man came to him and said: Last night I gave my wife as many divorces as the number of the stars. He asked: "Did you say it all at once?" He said: Yes. He asked: "Do you want her to be separated from you?" He said: Yes. He said: "It is as you said." Then he said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made divorce clear. So whoever divorces as Allah has commanded, the ruling has been made clear for him; and whoever confuses matters for himself, we leave him with that very confusion. By Allah! You cannot confuse matters for yourselves and then have us bear it on your behalf; rather, it will be as you say." The narrator said: We think Ibn Sirin said something that I do not remember; most likely he said: "Even if he had all the women of the earth - then said this - they would all be gone."
