Alqamah bin Qays narrates: I spent a night with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He got up at the beginning of the night, then stood for prayer. He would recite like the recitation of the imam in the mosque of his neighbourhood, reciting slowly and distinctly, without modulating his voice; he would let those around him hear, and he did not raise his voice, until there remained of the last darkness of the night only as much as the interval between the adhan of Maghrib and finishing its prayer. Then he prayed witr.
