Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said: I was a slave of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib. I had accepted Islam, Umm al-Fadl had accepted Islam, and Abbas had also accepted Islam, but he used to conceal his Islam out of fear of his people. Abu Lahab stayed behind from Badr and sent al-As bin Hisham in his place, who owed him a debt. He said to him: Go to this battle on my behalf, and I will waive the debt you owe me. So he did that. When the news of the defeat came and Allah disgraced Abu Lahab - I was a weak man, carving these cups in a room, and he passed by me - by Allah, I was sitting in the room carving my cups, and Umm al-Fadl was with me, when that sinner Abu Lahab came dragging his feet - I think the narrator said: until he sat down by the rope of the room - and his back was towards my back. Then the people said: This is Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith. Abu Lahab said: Come here to me, O my nephew! So Abu Sufyan came and sat by him, and the people also came and stood around them. He said: O my nephew, how did things go with the people? He said: Nothing at all. By Allah, all that happened was that we met them and turned our backs to them; they killed us however they wished and took us captive however they wished. By Allah, I do not blame the people. Abu Lahab asked: Why? He said: I saw some white men on piebald horses. By Allah, nothing could stand before them and nothing could resist them. The narrator said: I lifted the rope of the room and said: By Allah, those were the angels! At this Abu Lahab raised his hand and slapped me on the face. I tried to grapple with him, but he lifted me up, threw me to the ground and sat on top of me. Then Umm al-Fadl stood up and freed me, and I took one of the posts of the room and struck him with it, which left a terrible wound on his head. Umm al-Fadl said: O enemy of Allah! Did you think him weak because his master is not present? So he got up humiliated. By Allah, he lived only seven nights before Allah afflicted him with a contagious disease called 'adasah', which killed him. His two sons did not bury him for two or three nights until he began to stink. A man of Quraysh said to his sons: Are you not ashamed? Your father lies stinking in his house! They said: We fear the contagion of this sore. Quraysh used to fear 'adasah just as the plague is feared. A man said: Come on, I am with you. The narrator said: By Allah, they washed him only by throwing water on him from a distance, then they carried him to the upper part of Makkah, by a wall, and threw stones over him.
