Sayyiduna Aktham bin Abi al-Jawn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We said: O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so is always at the forefront in fighting? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is in the Fire." We said: O Messenger of Allah, if so-and-so, with his worship, his striving and his gentleness, is in the Fire, then where do we stand? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is only the humility of hypocrisy, and he is in the Fire." He said: We kept watch over him in battle; no rider or foot soldier passed by him but he pounced on him, until his wounds became many. We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has been martyred. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is in the Fire." When the pain of his wounds became severe, he took his sword, placed it between his breasts, then leaned on it until it came out of his back. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed a man does the deeds of the people of Paradise while he is of the people of the Fire, and indeed a man does the deeds of the people of the Fire while he is of the people of Paradise. Wretchedness or felicity overtakes him at the time his soul departs, and his end is sealed with it."
