حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ، عَنْ هُزَيْلِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: " مَنْ أَرَادَ الْآخِرَةَ أَضَرَّ بِالدُّنْيَا، وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الدُّنْيَا أَضَرَّ بِالْآخِرَةِ، وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَضُرُّوا بِالْفَانِي لِلْبَاقِي، وَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ كَثِيرٌ عُلَمَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ، وَكَثِيرٌ مُعْطُوهُ قَلِيلٌ سُؤَّالُهُ، فَأَطِيلُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاقْصُرُوا الْخُطْبَةَ، وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا، وَإِنَّ مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ زَمَانًا كَثِيرٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ عُلَمَاؤُهُ، كَثِيرٌ سُؤَّالُهُ قَلِيلٌ مُعْطُوهُ "
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever wants the Hereafter harms this world, and whoever wants this world harms the Hereafter," and he ordered the people to let what is perishing suffer loss for the sake of what is lasting. And he said: "You are in a time in which the scholars are many and the preachers few, and the givers are many and the askers few. So lengthen the prayer and keep the sermon short, for indeed eloquence has an effect like magic. And after you there will come a time in which the preachers will be many and the scholars few, the askers many and the givers few."
