حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّاهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ لَهُ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the kunyah Abu Abd al-Rahman, although no child had been born to him.
