Al-Zuhri narrates that on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Bring me the key of the Ka'bah." He was slow (in bringing it), while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood waiting for him, until sweat like pearls began to drip from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Does he not realize?" So a man ran to him. The woman who had the key (the narrator thinks he said: Uthman's mother) began to say: If he takes it from you, he will never give it back to you. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) kept on at her until she gave him the key, and he set off with it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) opened the door, then entered the House (the Ka'bah), then came out with the people around him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat by the Siqayah (the place for giving water to the pilgrims). Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, if we have been given prophethood, and are also given the Siqayah (the service of giving water) and the Hijabah (the custodianship of the Ka'bah), then no people will have a greater share than us. The narrator says: It was as if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked what he said. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and gave the key back to him, and said: "Keep it hidden." Abd al-Razzaq says: I narrated this hadith to Ibn Uyaynah, and he said: Ibn Jurayj informed me (I think from Ibn Abi Mulaykah) that on that day, when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke to him about the key, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I have only given you that in which you will bear a loss (expense), and I have not given you that from which you would gain." That is: I gave you the Siqayah because you have to spend on it, and I did not give you the Ka'bah (its custodianship), meaning that they (the custodians of the Ka'bah) take from the offerings made to it (the House of Allah). This is the statement of Abd al-Razzaq.
