Abu Nadrah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: We came to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) on a Friday in order to compare a mushaf of ours against his mushaf. When the time for the prayer came, he ordered us and we took a ritual bath (ghusl); then we came to the mosque and sat with an elder who was narrating hadith. When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, we turned to him, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Muslims will have three great cities: one city at the meeting place of the two seas, one city in al-Hirah, and one city in Syria. Then the Muslims will be struck by terror three times. The Dajjal will emerge on the flanks of an army and will rout (them) from the direction of the east. The first city he reaches will be the city at the meeting place of the two seas; with him will be seventy thousand people wearing green shawls (taylasan), and most of his followers will be Jews and women. The people of that city will split into three groups: one group will stay and say: We will test him and see what this is; one group will join the Bedouins; and one group will join the city nearest to them. Then he (the Dajjal) will come to Syria, and its people will take refuge at the pass of Afiq. They will send out their livestock (to graze), and their livestock will be struck down, and this will be very hard on them. Severe hunger and hardship will afflict them, to the point that one of them will burn his bowstring and eat it. While they are in this state, suddenly at the time of suhur a caller will call out: O people, help has come to you! They will say: This is the voice of a man who has eaten his fill. Then Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend at the time of the Fajr prayer, and the people will say to him: O Spirit of Allah, step forward and lead us in prayer. He will say: You are the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); some of you are leaders over others, so you step forward and lead us in prayer. So the leader will step forward and lead them in prayer. Then Isa bin Maryam will take up his spear and set off towards the Dajjal. When he (the Dajjal) sees him, he will melt as lead melts. He will place his spear between his breasts and kill him, and he will rout his companions. On that day nothing will conceal any of them, to the point that the tree will say: O believer, this is a disbeliever, so kill him; and the stone will say: O believer, this is a disbeliever, so kill him."
