Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7948 — I was present with Sayyiduna Abu Umamah

Sa'id bin Abdullah al-Awdi says: I was present with Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in the throes of death, and he said: When I die, do with me as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do with our dead. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us, saying: "When one of your brothers dies and you have levelled the earth over his grave, let one of you stand at the head of his grave and say: 'O so-and-so, son of so-and-so (his mother)!' He hears it but does not answer. Then let him say: 'O so-and-so, son of so-and-so!' and he sits up straight. Then let him say: 'O so-and-so, son of so-and-so!' and he says: 'Guide us, may Allah have mercy on you,' but you do not perceive it. Then let him say: 'Remember that upon which you left the world: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, and that you were pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as Prophet, and with the Qur'an as guide.' Then Munkar and Nakir (the two angels), one of them will take the hand of his companion and say: 'Come, let us go; we will not sit with one who has been taught his argument.' So Allah Himself will be his advocate instead of the two of them." A man said: O Messenger of Allah! What if he does not know his mother (to whom should he be attributed)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is attributed to Hawwa (peace be upon her): 'O so-and-so, son of Hawwa.'"
