Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7311 — we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Amr bin Qurrah came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, wretchedness has been written for me. I do not see myself being given provision from anywhere except through my tambourine and my hand (my craft), so permit me to sing without indecency." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not permit you, and there is no honour in it. You have lied, O enemy of Allah! Allah gave you lawful and pure provision, but you chose what Allah has made unlawful of His provision in place of what Allah has made lawful. Had I warned you beforehand, I would have dealt (severely) with you. Get up and leave me, and repent to Allah. Beware! If you do anything after this warning, I will beat you with a painful beating, shave your head as a mark of disgrace, banish you from your family, and make your belongings lawful plunder for the young men of Madinah." So Amr got up in such a state of disgrace and humiliation that none but Allah knows it. When he turned away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These disobedient ones: whoever of them dies without repentance, Allah will raise him on the Day of Resurrection just as he was, effeminate and naked, unable to cover himself from people even with a rag; every time he stands up, he will fall down."
Then Urfutah bin Nahik al-Tamimi stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my family and I are provided for by this hunting, and there is a share and blessing for us in it. It is a pursuit that keeps one occupied from the remembrance of Allah and from congregational prayer, yet we are in need of it. So do you declare it lawful or unlawful?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I declare it lawful because Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made it lawful. What an excellent deed it is, and Allah is most deserving to accept excuses. All the messengers Allah had before me used to hunt or seek game. When you are absent from congregational prayer in search of provision, it is sufficient for you that you love the congregation and its people, and love the remembrance of Allah and its people. Seek lawful provision for yourself and your dependants, for that is jihad in the path of Allah. And know that the help of Allah is in righteous trade."
