Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I went out with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) until we came upon Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) in a garden in al-Aliyah. When Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: O people, O people! Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What is the matter with him, may he have no father, calling the people against me? The narrator said: He was only calling a slave of his who was called Yuhannas. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Suhayb, there is nothing in you that I find fault with except three traits; were it not for them, I would not give precedence to anyone over you. Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What are they? For you are much given to finding fault. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will he then tell me about them? Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whatever you ask me about, I will tell you. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And whatever you tell me, I will believe you. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I see that you squander your wealth, that you take as your kunyah Abu Yahya, after the name of a prophet, and that you trace your lineage to the Arabs while your tongue is non-Arab. He said: As for my squandering my wealth, I spend it only where it is due. As for my kunyah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the kunyah Abu Yahya; shall I abandon it because of what you say? And as for my lineage among the Arabs, the Romans took me captive when I was small, so I do not remember my family; and had I sprung from a heap of dung, I would have traced my lineage to it.
