حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي سَمِينَةَ، ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَزَّارُ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ بُنْدَارٌ قَالَا: ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ثنا النَّهَّاسُ بْنُ قَهْمٍ، ثنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ، أَنَّ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ، لَمَّا قَدِمَ الشَّامَ رَأَى الْيَهُودَ يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَحْبَارِهِمْ وَعُلَمَائِهِمْ، وَرَأَى النَّصَارَى يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَسَاقِفَتِهِمْ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ سَجَدَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: «مَا هَذَا يَا مُعَاذُ؟» فَقَالَ: إِنِّي قَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ، فَرَأَيْتُ الْيَهُودَ يَسْجُدُونَ لِعُلَمَائِهِمْ وَأَحْبَارِهِمْ، وَرَأَيْتُ النَّصَارَى يَسْجُدُونَ لِقِسِّيسِيهِمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: تَحِيَّةَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ: «كَذَبُوا عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ كَمَا حَرَّفُوا كِتَابَهُمْ، لَوْ أَمَرْتُ أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ الْمَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Syria, he saw the Jews prostrating to their scholars and rabbis, and he saw the Christians prostrating to their bishops. So when he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he prostrated to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is this, O Mu'adh?" He said: I went to Syria and saw the Jews prostrating to their scholars and rabbis, and I saw the Christians prostrating to their priests and monks, so I asked: What is this? They said: This is the greeting of the prophets (a manner of showing reverence). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have lied against their prophets just as they altered their Book. If I were to order anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would order the woman to prostrate to her husband."
