Dhu al-Jawshan, a man from the tribe of al-Dibab, said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after he had finished with the people of Badr, with the foal of a mare of mine called al-Qarha', and I said: O Muhammad! I have brought you the foal of al-Qarha' so that you may take it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have no need of it, but if you wish, I will give you in exchange for it a choice coat of mail from the armour of Badr." I said: I will not take anything else in exchange for it today. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have no need of it." Then he said: "O Dhu al-Jawshan! Will you not accept Islam, so that you may be among the first in this matter?" I said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why?" I said: I have seen that your people have grown weary of you (Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah said in his narration: have toyed with you). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How did news reach you of their being slain at Badr?" I said: It has reached me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there some pledge with you?" I said: Yes, that you prevail over the Ka'bah and settle in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps, if you live, you will see that." Then he said: "O Bilal! Take the man's bag and provision him with ajwah dates." When I turned to leave, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, he is one of the best horsemen of Banu Amir." The narrator said: By Allah, I had only just reached my family when a rider approached, and I asked: Where are you coming from? He said: From Makkah. I asked: What have the people done? He said: By Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has prevailed over it and settled in it. I said: May my mother be bereaved of me! By Allah, had I accepted Islam that day and then asked him for (the city of) al-Hirah, he would surely have granted it to me. Abu Muslim said: Musaddad said: It reached me from Ibn al-Mubarak that he said: His name was Shurahbil, and he was only called Dhu al-Jawshan because his chest was protruding.
