Through the same chain, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him for a ruling about what is forbidden to him and what is lawful for him, and he asked about his sacrifice, his livestock, his goats, and the first-born (far') of his camels and sheep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Good and pure things are lawful for you, and impure things are forbidden to you, unless you become in need of food that is not lawful for you; then eat of it as much as will make you free of need." At that time the man asked: What is my need, what may I eat of it when I reach that state, and what is the sufficiency that frees me from needing it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "If you hope for new births, then get by on the meat of your livestock until those new births; or if you hope for rain that you expect will reach you, then get by on the meat of your livestock until then; or if you hope to receive some provisions, then get by on the meat of your livestock until you reach them. And if you hope for none of these, then feed your family from whatever is available to you until you become free of need." The Bedouin asked: What is the sufficiency after which I should leave it, if I find that provision? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "When you have given your family their fill of evening milk, then avoid the food that is forbidden to you. As for your wealth, all of it is easy (lawful) for you; there is nothing forbidden in it, except that from the new births of your camels there is a far' (first-born), and from the new births of your sheep there is a far', which you raise along with your livestock until you are free of need (of it); then, if you wish, feed it to your family, and if you wish, give its meat in charity." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to sacrifice an 'atirah (the sacrifice of the month of Rajab) from the sheep, out of every grazing flock.
