Ali bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was in the palace with al-Hajjaj while he was reviewing the people because of the affair of Ibn al-Ash'ath. Then Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came until he drew near, and al-Hajjaj said to him: Ho there, you wicked one! Roaming about in the turmoil, once with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), once with Ibn al-Zubayr, and once with Ibn al-Ash'ath! By the One in whose Hand is my soul, I will uproot you as gum is plucked from a tree, and I will strip your skin as the skin of a lizard is stripped. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whom does the Amir (may Allah set him right) mean? Al-Hajjaj said: It is you I mean, may Allah make your hearing deaf. So Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the istirja' and said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return)." Then he left him and said: "Had I not remembered my children and feared for them, I would have spoken to him, right where I stood, words after which he could never answer me."
