A man narrates: We were with Sayyiduna Salim bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) on a journey when a man sneezed and said: As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you). Sayyiduna Salim bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Upon you and upon your mother too. (Then he said:) Perhaps you felt some resentment towards me in your heart because of my saying: Upon you and upon your mother too? He said: I wished that you had not mentioned my mother before the people, either with good or with bad. He said to him: I only said to you what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (In his presence) a man sneezed and said: As-salamu alaykum, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Upon you and upon your mother too." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi ala kulli hal' (praise be to Allah in every state); and let his brother or his companion say to him: 'Yarhamukallah' (may Allah have mercy on you); and let him say: 'Yaghfirullahu lana wa lakum' (may Allah forgive us and you)."
