Sayyiduna Salim bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell unconscious during his illness. Then he came to and said: "Has the time of prayer come?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: My father is a soft-hearted man; if you were to order someone else, then let him lead the people in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell unconscious again, then came to and said: "Has the time of prayer come?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) again said: My father is a soft-hearted man; if you were to order someone else to lead the people in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell unconscious again, then came to and said: "Has the iqamah for the prayer been called?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me someone I can lean on." So Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned on them both and came to the mosque. He entered while Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing leading the people in prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to step back, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped him, and he was seated beside Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) until he completed his prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not hear any man saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has died except that I will strike him with the sword. Then he took hold of my arm, leaned on me and set off walking until we arrived (there). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Make room. So the people made room for him. He bent over him (peace and blessings be upon him) and touched him, then said: "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" [Surah al-Zumar: 30]. The people said: O Companion of the Messenger of Allah, has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) died? He said: Yes. So the people knew for certain that it was as he said. The people said: O Companion of the Messenger of Allah, shall we offer the funeral prayer over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. They asked: How shall we pray? He said: A group will enter, say the takbir, supplicate and send blessings, then leave; then another group will come, until all have finished. They asked: O Companion of the Messenger of Allah, will the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) be buried? He said: Yes. They asked: And where will he be buried? He said: Where he passed away, for Allah Almighty did not take his soul except in a pure place. So the people knew for certain that it was as he said. Then he stood up and said: Your companion's body is with you, and he ordered them to wash him, then he went out. The Muhajirun gathered to consult one another, and they said: Let us go to our brothers of the Ansar, for they too have a share in this matter. So they went, and a man from the Ansar said: Let there be one leader from us and one leader from you. Then Sayyiduna Umar took the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: Tell me, who is entitled to these three things: "The second of two, when they were both in the cave" [Surah al-Tawbah: 40] - who were those two? "When he said to his companion: Do not grieve" - who was his companion? "Indeed, Allah is with us." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took the hand of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and pledged allegiance upon it, and said to the people: Pledge allegiance to him. So the people pledged allegiance to him in a most excellent and beautiful manner.
