Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral was brought, and it was said: O Messenger of Allah, will you lead the funeral prayer for him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has he left anything behind?" It was said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he in debt?" The people said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer for him. I was still standing when another funeral was brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he in debt?" The people said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has he left anything behind?" The people said: Yes, three dinars. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are three brands (of fire)." Then we stayed for as long as Allah willed, and then another funeral was brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Has he left anything behind?" The people said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is he in debt?" The people said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You lead the funeral prayer for your companion." Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, his debt is upon me. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer for him.
