It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became severe, and Sayyidah Aishah and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with them both) were with him, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he raised his head and then said: "Come close to me." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned upon him, and he remained with him (peace and blessings be upon him) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and closed the door. Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came, bringing Banu Abd al-Muttalib with him, and they stood at the door. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began to say: May my father and mother be ransomed for you! You were pure in life and you are pure in death. And a fragrance spread such as they had never found before. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in to me. At that the Ansar said: We adjure you by Allah to let us (also) have our share in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So they let in one of their men, who was called Sayyiduna Aws bin Khawli (may Allah be pleased with him); he was carrying a water jar in one hand. Then they heard a voice in the house: Do not strip the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); wash him as he is, in his shirt. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed him, putting his hand under the shirt, while Sayyiduna al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) held the garment away from him and the Ansari Companion kept bringing the water. On Sayyiduna Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) hand there was a cloth, and he would put his hand (with that cloth) inside.
