Salamah al-Ijli said: A nephew of mine (my sister's son), who was called Qudamah, came from the desert. My nephew said to me: I would like to meet Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) and greet him with salam. So we set out until we found him in al-Mada'in. At that time he was the commander over twenty thousand (soldiers). We found him sitting on a cot, weaving palm leaves (into baskets and the like). We greeted him with salam. I said: O Abu Abdullah! This is my nephew; he has come to me from the desert and would like to greet you. He said: And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah. I said: He claims that he loves you. He said: May Allah love him.
Then we began to talk, and we said to him: O Abu Abdullah! Will you not tell us about your origin, and where you are from? He said: As for my origin and where I am from, I am a man from the people of Ramhurmuz. We were a Magian (fire-worshipping) people. A Christian man from the region of al-Jazirah came to us, whose mother was from among us. He settled among us and built a monastery among us.
I used to study in the Persian school. There was a boy with me in the school who would always come crying, his parents having beaten him. One day I asked him: What makes you cry? He said: My parents beat me. I asked: Why do they beat you? He said: I go to the master of this monastery, and when they find out, they beat me. And if you were to go to him, you would hear wondrous things from him. I said: Take me with you as well. So we went to him, and he told us about the beginning of creation, the beginning of the creation of the heavens and the earth, and about Paradise and Hell. He told us wondrous things. I kept going back and forth to him with that boy. The other boys of the school also found out about us, and they too began coming with us.
When the people of the village saw this, they came to him (the man of the monastery) and said to him: O you! You have lived in our neighbourhood and have seen nothing but good from us, but we see our children going back and forth to you, and we fear that you will turn them against us; leave us. He said: Very well. Then he said to the boy who used to come to him: Come out with me. He said: I cannot do that; you know how strict my parents are with me. I said: But I will come out with you, and I was an orphan; I had no father.
So I set out with him. We took the mountain route of Ramhurmuz and kept walking, relying (upon Allah), and living on the fruit of the trees, until we reached al-Jazirah, then reached Nasibin. My companion said to me: O Salman! Here there are people who are the most devoted worshippers among the people of the earth, and I would like to meet them. So we came to them on a Sunday, while they were gathered. My companion greeted them with salam, and they welcomed him and were delighted with him, and said: Where have you been absent? He said: I was with some brothers of mine in the direction of Persia. So we talked about what we talked about, then my companion said to me: Get up, Salman, let us go. I said: No, let me stay with these people. He said: You cannot bear what these people bear; they fast from one Sunday to the next Sunday and do not sleep at night. And among them was a man from the sons of kings, who had left kingship and taken up worship.
I stayed with them until evening, then they began to go one by one to their caves where they lived. When evening came, that man from the sons of kings said: What about this boy? Do not leave him like this; let one of you take him (with him). They said: You take him. So he said to me: Come, Salman. He took me with him to his cave and said: O Salman! This is bread and this is a relish; eat when you are hungry, fast when you feel energetic, pray as much as you wish, and sleep when you are tired. Then he became occupied with his prayer. He said nothing to me other than that, nor did he look at me. Intense grief overcame me for seven days, as no one spoke to me. Then Sunday came, and we went to the place where they used to gather. They would gather every Sunday and break their fast, meet one another and greet one another with salam, and then not meet again until the next Sunday.
Then we returned to our dwelling, and he said to me just as he had said the first time: This is bread and a relish; eat when you are hungry, fast when you feel energetic, pray as much as you wish, and sleep when you are tired. Then he became occupied with prayer and neither turned to me nor spoke to me until the next Sunday. Grief overcame me and I thought of running away, then I said (to myself): Let me be patient for another two or three Sundays. When Sunday came, we returned to them, and they broke their fast and gathered. He said to them: I want to go to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). They said: What do you need there? He said: It has been a long time since I was there. They said: We fear that something might happen to you and someone other than us would take care of you, whereas we would like to be the ones who take care of you. He said: It has been a long time since I was there.
When I heard him say that, I was glad. I said (to myself): We will travel and meet people, and the grief I was feeling will leave me. So he and I set out. He would fast from one Sunday to the next, pray the whole night, and walk during the day. Whenever we stopped, he would stand and pray. This continued until we reached Bayt al-Maqdis. At the gate there was a crippled man begging from the people. He said: Give me something. My companion said: I have nothing with me. So we entered Bayt al-Maqdis. When the people of Bayt al-Maqdis saw him, they were delighted with him and welcomed him. He said to them: This is my boy; take good care of him. So they took me and fed me bread and meat. He became occupied with prayer and did not turn to me until Sunday, then (on Sunday) he finished.
He said to me: O Salman! I want to lay down my head (and rest); when the shade reaches such-and-such a place, wake me up. So he laid down his head and slept. The shade reached the place he had mentioned, but seeing his striving and exertion, I did not wake him; I felt pity for him. He woke up alarmed and said: O Salman! Did I not tell you to wake me when the shade reached such-and-such a place? I said: Yes, but seeing your striving, I felt pity for you, and that is what held me back. He said: Woe to you, O Salman! I dislike that any part of time should pass in which I have not done some good deed for Allah. Then he said to me: O Salman! Know that the best of our religion today is Christianity. I said: Will there be, after today, a religion better than Christianity? - these words were cast upon my tongue (of their own accord) - He said: Yes, soon a prophet will be sent who will eat from a gift but will not eat from charity, and between his shoulders will be the Seal of Prophethood. When you find him, follow him and believe him. I said: Even if he commands me to leave Christianity? He said: Yes, for he will be a prophet who commands nothing but the truth and says nothing but the truth. By Allah! If I were to find him and he commanded me to fall into the fire, I would fall into it.
Then we left Bayt al-Maqdis and passed by that crippled man, and he said: You went in and gave me nothing; now you are leaving, so give me something. He (my companion) looked around and saw no one around him, then said: Give me your hand, and he took him by the hand and said: Stand up by the permission of Allah. So he stood up, sound and whole, and set off towards his family. I kept watching him in amazement.
My companion went out and walked quickly, and I followed him, when some Bedouins of (the tribe of) Kalb met us and took me captive. They put me on a camel and tied me up with ropes, then, selling me from hand to hand, they brought me to Madinah, until a man of the Ansar bought me and put me to work in his date-palm orchard. I remained there. And it was there that I learned to make (things) from palm leaves: I would buy palm leaves for one dirham, make (them into goods) and sell them for two dirhams; I would put one dirham back into palm leaves and spend one dirham. I loved to eat from the earnings of my own hands. (The narrator said:) And at that time he (Sayyiduna Salman, may Allah be pleased with him) was the commander over twenty thousand (soldiers).
While we were in Madinah, news reached us that a man had appeared in Makkah claiming that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had sent him. We stayed for as long as Allah willed, then he emigrated and came to us. I said: By Allah! I will certainly put him to the test. So I went to the market and bought camel meat for one dirham, then cooked it and made a bowl of tharid, carried it on my shoulder until I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and placed it before him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is this, charity or a gift?" I said: Rather, it is charity. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Eat, saying Bismillah," and he himself held back and did not eat. I waited a few days, then again bought meat for one dirham and prepared it the same way, then carried it and placed it before him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is this, a gift or charity?" I said: No, rather it is a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Eat, saying Bismillah," and he himself ate with them. I said: By Allah! This man eats from a gift but does not eat from charity. Then I looked and saw between his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulders the Seal of Prophethood, like a pigeon's egg, and I accepted Islam.
Then one day I said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! What kind of people are the Christians? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no good in them," while I loved them intensely because of the striving and exertion I had seen in them. Then a few days later I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) again: O Messenger of Allah! What kind of people are the Christians? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no good in them, nor in the one who loves them." I said in my heart: By Allah! I do love them. And this was at the time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent out the (military) detachments and the sword had been drawn: one detachment would go out (to the field) and another would return, while the sword dripped (with blood). I said (in my heart): Now it will be said about me that I love them, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) will send for me and have my neck struck. So I sat at home.
Then one day a messenger came to me (to summon me) and said: O Salman! Come. I asked: To whom? He said: To the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said (in my heart): By Allah! This is exactly what I was afraid of. I said: Very well, (give me a moment) so that I may catch up with you. He said: No, by Allah, (I will stay here) until you come. I was saying to myself that if he went away, I would run off. So he took me along and I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he smiled and said: "O Salman! Rejoice, for Allah has granted you relief." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these verses to me: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it (the Qur'an) - they believe in it. And when it is recited to them, they say: We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord; indeed, we were Muslims even before it. Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured, and they repel evil with good, and spend from what We have provided them. And when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it and say: For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds; peace be upon you; we do not seek (the company of) the ignorant" (al-Qasas: 52-55). I said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the truth, I heard him say: If I were to find him and he commanded me to fall into the fire, I would fall into it; indeed, he is a prophet who says nothing but the truth and commands nothing but the truth.
