Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5954 — some matter arose between two men

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some matter arose between two men of the Ansar, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out at the time of a prayer to make peace between them. When the time of the prayer came, Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr! The time of prayer has come, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not here. Shall I give the adhan and the iqamah, and you lead the prayer? He said: As you wish. So he gave the adhan and the iqamah, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began the prayer. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and the people began to clap. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to move aside, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to stay firm in his place. When he had moved aside anyway, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed his prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! When I ordered you to stay standing in your place, what prevented you?" He replied: It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to go ahead of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
