Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf concerning a dispute that had arisen among them. Meanwhile the time of the Asr prayer came, so Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Bakr! Shall I call the iqamah and you lead the people in prayer? So Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the iqamah, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward and began leading the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, making his way through the rows, and the people began to clap. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) seldom looked around in his prayer, but when the people clapped a great deal, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) making his way through the rows. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) moved back, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to stay in his place, but he moved back and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed his prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! When I signalled to you to stay standing in your place, why did you not stay?" He replied: It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "What is the matter with you that when something happens to you, you start clapping? Say tasbih (Subhan Allah); clapping is only for women."
