Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was called urgently to Banu Amr bin Awf over a matter between them, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) wished to make peace among them. The prayer was established and the people waited. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and the people clapped for Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he would step back. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he turned to the people and said: "What is this clapping? Saying Subhan Allah is for men, and clapping is for women."
