It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that Amir bin al-Tufayl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. He argued back and forth with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his voice became raised, while Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with his sword. He said: "O Amir! Lower your voice before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "What business is that of yours?" Thabit said: "By the One who honoured him (peace and blessings be upon him)! Were it not that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would dislike it, I would strike your head with this sword." Amir, who was sitting, looked at Thabit, who was standing, and said to him: "By Allah, O Thabit! If you were to face me, you would turn your back and flee from me." Thabit said: "By Allah, O Amir! If you were to face my tongue, you would come to loathe your life." Meanwhile a nephew of Amir sneezed and said Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to him. Then Amir sneezed and did not say Alhamdulillah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not respond to him. Amir said: "You responded to this boy and left me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This one praised Allah." At that he said: "I swear! I will fill it (Madinah) against you with horses and foot soldiers." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah and the two sons of Qaylah (al-Aws and al-Khazraj) will suffice me against your evil." Then Amir went out and gathered an army against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and three clans of Banu Sulaym gathered with him; they were the ones whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to curse: Usayyah, Dhakwan and Ri'l. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to curse them in the Fajr prayer: "O Allah! Curse Lihyan, Ri'l, Dhakwan and Usayyah; they disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. Allahu Akbar." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication against them for seventeen nights. Then when he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard that Amir had gathered an army against him (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent against them Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri and the rest of the Ansar, and their commander was al-Mundhir bin Amr. They went on until they camped at Bi'r Ma'unah, and Amir came until he launched a surprise attack on them and killed them all; none of them escaped except Amr bin Umayyah, who was with the riding camels. On the day they were killed, Allah revealed to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the news of his companions, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companions have been martyred; give your opinion." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against Amir; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Suffice me against the evil of Amir." And Allah sufficed him (peace and blessings be upon him) against him. He came until he camped in his courtyard, and Allah afflicted his throat with a disease of the glands, in the house of a woman of Banu Salul. And he kept leaping about, saying: "Woe to Amir! A gland-disease like the gland-disease of a camel, in the house of a Saluli woman!" He wished to die in her house, and he remained in that state until he died in her house. And Arbad bin Qays was struck by lightning, and he was burned and died; and those who were with them went back.
