Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to be called "the Qari" in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Once he met the enemy and fell back from them, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Would you like to go to Syria? Perhaps Allah will bestow His favour upon you." He said: "No, rather (I want to go) to the very enemy from whom I fled." The narrator said: Then on the day of al-Qadisiyyah he addressed the people and said: "Listen! Tomorrow, if Allah wills, we will meet the enemy and we will be martyred, so do not wash the blood off us, and do not shroud us in anything except the garment that is on us."
