Muhammad bin Ubayy bin Ka'b narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), that he had a heap of dried dates which kept diminishing. So one night he kept watch over it, and suddenly he saw a creature resembling a boy near puberty. He greeted it with salam and it returned his greeting. He asked: "What are you - a jinn or a human?" It said: "No, rather I am a jinn." He said: "Then give me your hand." So it gave him its hand, and its hand was like the paw of a dog and its hair like the hair of a dog. He said: "Is this how the jinn are created?" It said: "The jinn know that there is none among them stronger than me." He asked: "What brought you here?" It said: "We learned that you love giving charity, so we came to take some of your food." He asked: "Then what will protect us from you?" It said: "This verse of Surah al-Baqarah: 'Allah - there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence' [al-Baqarah: 255]. Whoever recites it in the evening will be protected from us until morning, and whoever recites it in the morning will be protected from us (that is, from the devils) until evening." When morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wicked one spoke the truth."
