Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) set out to perform Umrah and stayed with Abu Safwan Umayyah bin Khalaf. It was Umayyah's habit that whenever he went to Syria and passed through Madinah, he would stay with Sa'd. Umayyah said to Sa'd: Wait until midday, when the people are inattentive, then go and perform the tawaf. So while Sa'd was performing tawaf of the Ka'bah in safety, Abu Jahl came to him and said: Who is this person performing tawaf of the Ka'bah in safety? Sa'd said: I am Sa'd. Abu Jahl said: You perform tawaf of the House in safety, when you have given refuge to Muhammad and his companions? Harsh words passed between the two of them, until Umayyah said to Sa'd: Do not raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam, for he is the chief of this valley. Sa'd said to him: By Allah! If you prevent me from performing tawaf of the House, I will certainly cut off your trade route to Syria. Umayyah kept restraining Sa'd, saying to him: Do not raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam. At that Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: Leave us alone, for I have heard Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that he will kill you. He said: Me? Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes. He said: By Allah! Muhammad does not lie. When they went out, Umayyah returned to his wife and said: Do you know what my brother from Yathrib said? Then he told her about it. Umayyah's wife said: Muhammad will not leave us alone. When the call to arms was raised for Badr and the people set out for Badr, his wife said to him: Do you not remember what your brother from Yathrib said to you? So he resolved not to go. But Abu Jahl said: You are one of the nobles of this valley, so travel with us for a day or two. So he travelled with them, and Allah destroyed him.
