Sayyiduna Zayd bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque of Madinah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began saying: "Where is so-and-so son of so-and-so?" He kept looking for people in this way and sending for them until they had all gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am about to tell you something, so remember it, preserve it, and convey it to those who come after you: Indeed Allah has chosen some of His creation." Then he recited this verse: "Allah chooses messengers from among the angels and from among mankind" [al-Hajj: 75]. "Creatures whom He will admit into Paradise. And I will choose from among you whomever I wish, and I will establish brotherhood between you as Allah established it between the angels. O Abu Bakr! Stand up." So he stood and knelt down in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have done me a favour, for which Allah will reward you. If I were to take an intimate friend (khalil), I would take you as my intimate friend. You are to me as my shirt is to my body." And he shook his shirt with his hand. Then he said: "Come close, O Umar!" So he came close, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You were very harsh against us, O Abu Hafs! I prayed to Allah that He strengthen the religion through you or through Abu Jahl, and Allah did that through you, and you were the dearer of the two to me. So you will be with me in Paradise, the third of three from this Ummah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved aside and established brotherhood between him and Abu Bakr. Then he called Uthman and said: "Come close, O Uthman! Come close, O Uthman!" He kept coming closer until his knee touched the knee of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him, then looked at the sky, and said three times: "Subhan Allah al-'Azim (Glory be to Allah, the Magnificent)." Then he looked at Uthman and found that his buttons were undone, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fastened them with his own hand, then said: "Gather the two edges of your cloak over your throat, for you have a standing among the people of the heavens. You are among those who will come to me at the Pond while blood is gushing from your veins, and I will say: 'Who did this to you?' And you will say: 'So-and-so and so-and-so.'" And that was the speech of Jibril (peace be upon him), and at that moment it was called out from the heavens: "Behold! Uthman is a trustee over every deserter." Then he called Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and said: "Come close, O trustee of Allah and trustee in the heavens! Allah will give you authority over your wealth with truth. You have a supplication kept with me which I have deferred." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Choose it for me." He said: "O Abd al-Rahman! You have placed upon me the burden of a trust. May Allah increase your wealth." The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept moving his hand, then he moved aside and established brotherhood between him and Uthman. Then Talhah and al-Zubayr came in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come close to me." So they came close, and he said: "You two are my disciples (hawari), like the disciples of Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him)." Then he established brotherhood between the two of them. Then he called Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and Ammar bin Yasir and said: "O Ammar! The rebellious group will kill you." Then he established brotherhood between them. Then he called Uwaymir Abu al-Darda' and Salman al-Farisi and said: "O Salman! You are one of us, the people of the household (Ahl al-Bayt). Allah has given you the first knowledge and the last knowledge, and the first Book and the last Book." Then he said: "O Abu al-Darda'! Shall I not guide you?" He said: "Certainly, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "If you rescue them, they will rescue you; if you leave them, they will not leave you; and if you flee from them, they will catch up with you. So lend them your honour for the day of your need." Then he established brotherhood between the two of them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the faces of his Companions and said: "Rejoice and be glad, for you will be the first to come to me at the Pond, and you will be in the loftiest chambers." Then he looked at Abdullah bin Umar and said: "All praise is for Allah, who guides out of misguidance." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! My soul left me and my back broke when I saw that what you (peace and blessings be upon him) did with your Companions you did with everyone except me. If this is because of some displeasure with me, then I am here to make amends to you, and the honour is yours." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One who sent me with the truth, I held you back only for myself. You are to me as Harun (peace be upon him) was to Musa (peace be upon him), and you are my heir." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! What will I inherit from you?" He said: "What the prophets left as inheritance." He said: "And what did the prophets before you leave as inheritance?" He said: "The Book of Allah and the Sunnah of their prophet. And you will be with me in my palace in Paradise, with my daughter Fatimah, and you will be my companion." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "As brothers, on thrones facing one another" [al-Hijr: 47], meaning friends for the sake of Allah, looking at one another.
