Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and with us were some Bedouins who would go ahead of us. A Bedouin would get ahead of his companions, fill the cistern, put stones around it and spread a leather sheet over it until his companions arrived. A man of the Ansar came to a Bedouin and loosened the rein of his she-camel so that it could drink, but the Bedouin refused to let it drink. He (the Ansari) pulled out a stone and the water flowed away. The Bedouin had a piece of wood with him; he struck the Ansari's head with it and wounded it. He (the Ansari) went to Abdullah bin Ubayy, the leader of the hypocrites, and informed him, and he was one of his associates. Abdullah bin Ubayy became furious, then said: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse from around him," meaning the Bedouins, and they used to attend upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at mealtimes. Abdullah said to his associates: When they disperse from Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), take food to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so that only he and those with him eat. Then he said to his associates: When you return to Madinah, the more honourable among you will drive out the more humble (from there). Zayd said: I was riding behind my uncle (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard what Abdullah bin Ubayy said, and we were (from the family of) his maternal uncles. I told my uncle, and he went and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for (him), and he swore and denied it, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) believed him and disbelieved me. Then my uncle came and said: All you wanted was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) be displeased with you and the Muslims call you a liar. Such grief came over me as had never come over anyone. Meanwhile, I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey and my head had drooped from grief, when suddenly the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me; he (peace and blessings be upon him) rubbed my ear and smiled at me, and even eternal life in this world in exchange for it would not have pleased me (as much). Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with me and asked: What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to you? I said: He did not say anything to me except that he (peace and blessings be upon him) rubbed my ear and smiled. He said: Rejoice. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with me, and I told him the same thing I had told Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah al-Munafiqun.
