Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) as his scribe. He used to write letters to the kings, and such was his trustworthiness that when he wrote to one of the kings, he would write it, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would order him to fold it, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would seal it without reading it, because of his trust in him. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also appointed Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) as his scribe; he wrote down the revelation and also wrote letters to the kings. When both Abdullah bin al-Arqam and Zayd bin Thabit were absent and he (peace and blessings be upon him) needed to write to a commander of the armies or a king, or to have a deed granting land written for someone, he would order whoever was present to write it. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit, al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan and Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them), as well as other Arabs whose names have been mentioned, wrote for him (peace and blessings be upon him).
