It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning some thirty-odd chiefs of Quraysh, and they were thrown into one of the wells of Badr, where they rotted. It was his (peace and blessings be upon him) practice that whenever he overcame a people, he would stay on the battlefield for three days. When the third day came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his mount to be prepared, and its saddle was fastened on it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off on foot, and his Companions followed him (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: We think he (peace and blessings be upon him) is going for some need of his. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the edge of the well and said: "O so-and-so son of so-and-so, and O so-and-so son of so-and-so! Would you not have liked to have obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Have you found what your Lord promised to be true? We have certainly found what our Lord promised us to be true." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you speaking to bodies that have no souls in them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you do not hear what I say any better than they do." Sa'id said: Qatadah said: "Allah brought them to life, by Allah, until they heard his (peace and blessings be upon him) words."
