Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 4462 — I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said to Dawud (peace be upon him): Build a house for Me on the earth. So Dawud (peace be upon him) built a house for himself before the house he had been commanded to build. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then revealed to him: O Dawud! Have you set up your house before My house? He said: O my Lord! This is what You have said in what You decreed: whoever rules gives himself preference. Then he began building the mosque, and when the wall was complete, two-thirds of it fell down. He complained of that to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him that it is not fitting for you to build a house for Me. He said: O my Lord! And why? He said: Because of the blood that has been shed by your hands. He said: O my Lord! Was it not shed for Your pleasure and Your love? He said: Indeed it was, but they are My servants and I am the most merciful to them. That weighed heavily upon him, so Allah revealed to him: Do not grieve, for I will complete its building by the hands of your son Sulayman. When Dawud died, Sulayman began building it, and when it was complete he offered sacrifices, slaughtered animals, and gathered the Children of Israel. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: I see joy at the building of My house, so ask of Me and I will give you. He said: I ask You for three things: judgement that accords with Your judgement, a kingdom that befits no one after me, and that whoever comes to this house intending nothing but to pray in it shall come out of his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two of them have been granted to him, and I hope that he has been granted the third as well."
