Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to rent out his land for a portion of its produce. Then news reached him that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) was stating otherwise, saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden it. He said: We used to rent out land before we knew the hadith of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he felt uneasy about it, so he put his hand on my shoulder until we reached Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid renting out land? Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (say it), otherwise may Allah blind these two eyes of mine; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Do not rent out land for anything."
