Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went to visit Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) during the illness in which he passed away. I greeted him with salam and asked: How are you this morning? He sat up straight, and I said: Praise be to Allah, you are well this morning. He said: "Listen, I am, as you see, in pain, and on top of my pain you have given me another preoccupation. I have made a covenant for you for after me, and I have chosen for you the one who in my view is the best of you, and every one of you has swollen his nose over it in the hope that the matter would come to him. And I have seen that the world has come, though it has not yet fully come, and it is coming. You will adorn your houses with curtains of silk and cushions of brocade, and you will feel pain lying on beds of Adhari wool, as though each one of you were lying on the thorns of the sa'dan plant. By Allah, that one of you should be brought forward and his neck struck without any prescribed punishment (hadd) is better for him than to plunge into the floods of this world." Then he said: "Listen, I regret nothing except three things that I did, which I wish I had not done; three things that I did not do, which I wish I had done; and three things that I wish I had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about. As for the three things that I did and wish I had not done: I wish I had not had the house of Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) opened, and had left it alone, even if war had then broken out over it. And I wish that on the day of the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah I had placed the matter upon one of the two men, Abu Ubaydah or Umar, so that he would have been the Commander of the Believers and I would have been the minister. And I wish that when I sent Khalid bin al-Walid against the people of apostasy (riddah), I had myself stayed at Dhu al-Qassah, so that if the Muslims were victorious, well and good, and otherwise I would have been there as reinforcement or support. As for the things I wish I had done: I wish that on the day al-Ash'ath was brought to me as a captive I had struck his neck, for it seems to me that he will become the cause of the worst tribulation. And I wish that on the day al-Fuja'ah al-Sulami was brought to me I had not burned him, but had either killed him swiftly or set him free. And I wish that when I sent Khalid bin al-Walid to Syria I had sent Umar to Iraq, so that I would have stretched out both my hands in the way of Allah. And as for the three things that I wish I had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about: I wish I had asked him to whom this matter rightfully belongs, so that no one would dispute it with its rightful people; and I wish I had asked him whether the Ansar have any share in this matter; and I wish I had asked him about the paternal aunt and the brother's daughter (regarding inheritance), for there is some uncertainty in my heart about the two of them."
