حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّائِغُ الْمَكِّيُّ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، ثنا سَحْبَلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي يَحْيَى، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ هِشَامٍ أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سَحْبَلِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَدَنِيِّ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ الْمُدْلِجِيِّ، قَالَ: وَقَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعُسْفَانَ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: هَلْ لَكَ فِي عَقَائِلِ النِّسَاءِ وَأُدْمِ الْإِبِلِ مِنْ بَنِي مُدْلِجٍ؟ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي مُدْلِجٍ فَعُرِفَ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ الْقَوْمِ الْمُدَافِعُ عَنْ قَوْمِهِ مَا لَمْ يَأْثَمْ»
Khalid bin Abdullah bin Harmalah al-Mudliji (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped at Usfan, and a man said: "Do you have any interest in the beautiful women and the fine camels of Banu Mudlij?" Among the people there was a man from Banu Mudlij, and this showed on his face. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of a people is the one who defends his people, so long as he does not commit sin."
