حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ دُحَيْمٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا أَبِي ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْأَبَّارُ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، قَالُوا: حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّائِفِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ خَالِدِ بْنِ أَبِي جَبَلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ «أَبْصَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَى قَوْسٍ أَوْ عَصًا فِي مَشْرِقِ ثَقِيفٍ وَهُوَ يَقْرَأُ وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا، فَوَعَيْتُهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَأَنَا مُشْرِكٌ، ثُمَّ قَرَأْتُهَا وَأَنَا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ»
It is narrated from Khalid bin Abi Jabal al-Adwani (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the eastern part (the market) of Thaqif, standing leaning on a bow or a staff and reciting the surah 'Wa al-sama'i wa al-tariq' (By the sky and the night-comer) until he completed it. I memorised it in the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) while I was a polytheist, then I recited it (again) in Islam.
