Ziyad bin An'um (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that, at an anchorage at sea, they and the boat of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came together. He said: Whenever our food was ready, we would send for Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people of his boat. (Once) Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: You invited me while I was fasting, yet the right of your invitation was binding upon me, that I should accept it. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A Muslim has six obligatory rights over his Muslim brother; whoever abandons one of these qualities has abandoned an obligatory right of his brother: when he invites him, he should accept his invitation; when he meets him, he should greet him with salam; when he sneezes, he should say 'Yarhamuk Allah' (may Allah have mercy on you); when he falls ill, he should visit him; when he dies, he should follow his funeral; and when he seeks his advice, he should advise him sincerely." (The narrator's father said:) Among us was a man who loved to joke, and another man was in charge of our provisions. The joker used to say to the one in charge of the food: May Allah reward you with good and kindness. When he said this again and again, the one in charge became angry and began to abuse him. So the joker said (to Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him)): O Abu Ayyub, what do you think of a man who, when I say to him 'May Allah reward you with good and kindness', becomes angry and abuses me? Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to say: Whoever is not set right by good is set right by bad; so treat him the opposite way. So when the man came, the joker said to him: May Allah reward you with evil and hardship. At this the man laughed and was pleased, and said: You never give up your mischief in any situation. The joker then said: May Allah reward Abu Ayyub with good and kindness, for it was he who told me this.
