حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَلُولٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا، عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ، وَابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَسْلَمُ أَبُو عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، قَالَ: " قُلْنَا بَيْنَنَا بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ سِرًّا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ أَمْوَالَنَا قَدْ ضَاعَتْ فَلَوْ أَنَّا قُمْنَا فِيهَا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي كِتَابِهِ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا مَا هَمَمْنَا بِهِ {وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] فِي الْإِقَامَةِ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَإِصْلَاحِهَا وَتَرْكِ الْجِهَادِ وَالنَّفَقَةِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ "
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We said among ourselves to one another, in secret from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Our properties have been ruined; why do we not stay and attend to them (and leave jihad)? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed in His Book this verse, refuting what we had intended: "And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195], meaning (it was revealed) about staying occupied with properties and putting them in order, and abandoning jihad and spending in the way of Allah.
