Sayyiduna Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, while we were sitting on a mat: "Soon there will be a fitnah (trial)." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, what should we do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) moved his hand to the mat, took hold of it and said: "Do like this."
And one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told them that "soon there will be a fitnah," but many of the people did not hear it. So Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you not hear what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying? The people asked: What did he (peace and blessings be upon him) say? He said: "Soon there will be a fitnah." The people said: Then, O Messenger of Allah, what is the instruction for us? And what should we do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Return to your first state."
