حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي خَالِدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِلَالٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ صُهْبَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حِبَّانَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ بَيْنَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُصُّ عَلَى النَّاسِ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ، فَمَدَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ، فَقَالَ: «يَا فُلَانُ أَرَكَعْتَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَجْلِسَ؟» قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: «فَمَا مَنَعَكَ؟» قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَشْخَصَ وَأَنْتَ قَائِمٌ. فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: «إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلْيَبْدَأْ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit admonishing the people, a man came and sat down. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand towards him and said: "O so-and-so, did you pray two rak'ahs before sitting down?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not like to rise (for prayer) while you were standing (for the sermon). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "When one of you enters the mosque, let him begin by praying two rak'ahs before he sits down."
