Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 2620 — Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him)

Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and spoke to him privately. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and came to the Suffah (the raised platform), where he found Abbas, Aqil and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them), and he consulted them about marrying Umm Kulthum to Umar. At this Aqil became angry and said: O Ali, the days, months and years add nothing to you in your affairs except blindness. By Allah, if you do this, such and such will happen, and such and such, and he listed a number of things. Then he went off dragging his garment. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): By Allah, that was not sincere counsel from him; rather it was Umar's whip that drove him to the state you see. By Allah, this is not out of any desire for you, O Aqil; rather Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Every tie and lineage will be cut off on the Day of Resurrection except my tie and my lineage." At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) laughed and said: "Woe to Aqil, a foolish simpleton!"
