حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كَانَ اسْمُهُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ: عَبْدَ الْكَعْبَةِ «فَسَمَّاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ»
It is narrated from Ibn Sirin that the name of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) was Abd al-Ka'bah, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named him Abd al-Rahman.
