Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Madinah on our mounts, and those mounts were ones that fed on date stones. He (peace and blessings be upon him) caught sight of a man and said: "This is a man who has had no access to food." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) quickened his pace and we quickened ours along with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was a young man whose lips had cracked from eating the bark of trees. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Where have you come from?" He said: "I am going to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) so that I may pledge allegiance to him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad; I am the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Peace be upon you. O Messenger of Allah, guide me to Islam." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and that you affirm whatever has come from Allah." He said: "I affirm it." He said: "And that you establish the prayer." He said: "I affirm it." He said: "And that you fast Ramadan." He said: "I affirm it." He said: "And that you perform Hajj to the House (of Allah)." He said: "I affirm it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was describing Islam to him, we had crowded around him (peace and blessings be upon him), to see how far his description would go. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back and we turned back too, and the young man's camel put its foot into some rat holes and his neck was broken. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned and said: "Bring the man to me." We found that his neck had been twisted and he had died. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, looked at him, then turned his face away from him and said: "Carry him to the water." So we washed him, shrouded him and applied perfume (hanut) to him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dig a grave for him and make a niche (lahd), for the lahd is for us and the shaqq is for others besides us." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat at his grave, saying nothing to us for a while, then he said: "Shall I not tell you about this man? He is one of those who did little and were rewarded greatly, one of those about whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing' [Surah al-An'am: 82]. I turned my face away from him because two angels were putting the fruits of Paradise into his mouth."
