Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered the women in a house, then sent Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to us. He stood at the door, gave the greeting of peace, and then said: I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to you, to take your pledge that you will not steal, will not commit fornication, will not kill your children, will not bring forth a slander that you invent between your hands and feet, and will not disobey him in anything good. So we put our hands out from the outside of the door and he put out his hand, and we gave him the pledge. She further said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to bring out the young unmarried girls and the menstruating women for the two Eids, and forbade us to go out with a funeral or to attend the Friday prayer. I asked her: What is the matter in which you would not disobey him? She said: Wailing (over the dead).
