The two grandmothers of Abdullah bin Hassan al-Anbari, Safiyyah and Duhaybah, the daughters of Ulaybah, told him that when Sayyidah Qaylah bint Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with her) took her turn to lie down on her bed after Isha, she would say: "In the name of Allah, and relying upon Allah, I have laid down my side for my Lord, and I seek His forgiveness for my sin." She would say this several times, then she would say: "I seek refuge in Allah and in His perfect words, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can go beyond, from the evil of whatever descends from the sky and whatever ascends into it, from the evil of whatever descends into the earth and whatever comes out of it, from the evil of the trials of the day, and from the evil of the visitors of the night, except a visitor who comes with good. I believe in Allah and hold fast to Him. All praise is for Allah, before whose power everything has submitted; all praise is for Allah, before whose might everything has been humbled; all praise is for Allah, before whose grandeur everything has become lowly; and all praise is for Allah, before whose dominion everything has bowed. O Allah, I ask You by the foundations of might of Your Throne, by the utmost extent of mercy in Your Book, by Your most exalted majesty, Your greatest name, and Your perfect words, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can go beyond, that You look upon us with a look of mercy; leave no sin of ours but that You forgive it, no need but that You fulfil it, no enemy but that You destroy him, no one unclothed but that You clothe him, no debt but that You settle it, and no matter of good for us in this world and the Hereafter but that You grant it to us, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy. I believe in Allah and hold fast to Him." Then she would say Subhan Allah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 33 times and al-Hamdu lillah 34 times, then she would say: My daughter, this (supplication) is the crowning end. A daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) asking for a servant, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of something better than a servant?" She said: Certainly. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed her to say these hundred glorifications at bedtime, after Isha.
