It is narrated that the wife of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her)) said: O Abu Abdur-Rahman! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I was with some women of the Ansar and said: "Give charity, even if it is from your jewellery." So ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whether my spending on you and on my nephews will suffice for me as charity, or else I will spend it in the path of Allah. Abdullah said: I feel too shy to ask him; you ask him yourself. So I went to the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found that a woman of the Ansar was also there, whose need was the same as mine. Then Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, and we said: O Bilal! Convey to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) our greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah, and tell him that we have husbands and nephews; will our spending on our husbands and nephews suffice for us, or else should we spend it in the path of Allah? So Bilal went in and told him, and he said: "Convey to them both greetings of peace and the mercy of Allah, and tell them that their spending on their husbands and their sisters' sons carries a double reward: the reward of upholding the ties of kinship and the reward of charity."
