Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 21006 — Sayyidah Khawlah, who was the servant

Sayyidah Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), related that a puppy entered the house, went under the bed and died there. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then remained for several days without revelation descending upon him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khawlah, what has happened in the house of the Messenger of Allah that Jibril does not come to me? Has something happened in the house of the Messenger of Allah?" I said: By Allah, no day has come upon us better than today. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloak, put it on and went out. I said (to myself): If only I would tidy the house and sweep it. So I reached under the bed with the broom and felt something heavy, and I kept at it until I brought it out, and it was a dead puppy. I took it in my hand and threw it behind the house. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, his jaws trembling, and whenever revelation came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), a shivering would seize him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khawlah, cover me with a cloak." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "By the morning brightness, and by the night when it covers over, your Lord has neither forsaken you nor is He displeased" [Surah al-Duha: 2].
