Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf crucified Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) at the mountain pass of al-Madinah (on the road to it) in order to show this to Quraysh. When the people departed (from Hajj), they kept passing by without stopping at him, until Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by. He stopped at him and said: Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubayb! He said it three times. I forbade you from this (matter); he said that three times too. Indeed, you used to fast much, stand much in prayer, and maintain the ties of kinship. Then news of Abdullah bin Umar's (may Allah be pleased with them both) stopping there reached al-Hajjaj, so he had him taken down (from the cross) and thrown into the graveyard of the Jews. He sent word to Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) to come to him, while her sight had gone, but she refused. He sent to her again: You will certainly come, or else I will send to you someone who will drag you by your braids. She said: By Allah! I will not come to you until you send to me someone who drags me by my braids. His messenger came to him and informed him, so he said: O boy! Bring me my Sibti sandals. He handed him his sandals, and he got up and strutted along hurriedly until he came to her, and said to her: Did you see what Allah did to the enemy of Allah? She said: I saw that you ruined his world for him and he ruined your Hereafter for you. As for your taunting him with "Dhat al-Nitaqayn" (being the son of the woman with two waistbands), then yes, I had two nitaqs (waistbands): with one nitaq I used to cover the food of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the ants, and the other nitaq is the one women cannot do without (that is, the necessary waist-wrap). And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In Thaqif there will be a destroyer and a liar." As for the liar, we have recognised him, and as for the destroyer, that is you. The narrator said: So al-Hajjaj left from there.
