Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 20180 — In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَا: ثنا زُهَيْرٌ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِي سَهْلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ مُسَّةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَتْ: «كَانَتِ النِّسَاءُ تَقْعُدُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ نِفَاسِهَا أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً، وَكُنَّا نُصَلِّي، وَعَلَى وُجُوهِنَا الْوَرْسُ مِنَ الْكَلَفِ»
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), women would sit for forty nights after childbirth, and we would pray in that state while our faces were smeared with wars (saffron-like dye) because of dark blemishes.
